How
long can you store frozen semen and still have it be viable?
As long as it is properly stored in liquid nitrogen, frozen
semen is good indefinitely.
Do
all stallion semen freeze well?
Not all stallions
will produce semen that will freeze well. However, a large
percentage of stallions do freeze well.
How do I know if my stallion’s semen will
freeze?
The only way to find out if your
stallion’s semen will freeze is to try.
If
you have a stallion that does not have good quality cooled semen, is
there a chance he will produce good frozen semen?
Yes. Some
stallion’s that do not ship well for cooled shipments do produce
semen that freezes well.
How
many straws of semen do you get from a collection?
A
normal collection can yield anywhere between 15 to 50 straws, with
35 straws being average.
How
much semen is in a straw?
Most semen is put into .5ml
straws. At our lab a single straw is concentrated to contain 250
million sperm cells.
How
many straws need to be used per insemination?
It
depends on the lab where the semen was processed. The semen we
process is concentrated for the use of 4 straws per insemination.
Most stallion owners will send enough straws to inseminate a mare 2
to 3 times.
When
inseminating, will I have a similar volume of frozen semen as
cooled?
No. You will have a much smaller volume with
frozen semen as it has had excess fluids spun off. Although the
volume is less the number of actual sperm cells should be almost
identical.
Is
inseminating mares with frozen semen more difficult than using
cooled semen?
No. The procedure is slightly different
but quite simple.
Are
conception rates of frozen semen similar or inferior to cooled
semen?
Conception rates using frozen semen are
similar to those of cooled semen.
Is
all frozen semen the same?
No. All frozen semen is
not the same. The quality of the semen depends on where it was
frozen, their standards for motility and their lab procedures.
Conception rates using frozen semen are directly effected by the
standards of quality the lab you use employs.
